This is a great little game. Well worth the price if you like fantasy sports simulation games (ala Blood Bowl).
This game plays a lot different then blood bowl. Basic overview: two teams of jacks, steam power robots, confront each other on the "battledome" trying to knock a giant ball around and into the opposing goal. Each robot gets to choose two arms (from a total of sixteen per team) before the match, each arm having different special abilities. The really unique twist to this game is a form of resource management, you only get 10 "action" dice each turn and you use them for every action you take (aside from moving). You can choose to use more or less dice depending on how many successes you want, but that will affect how many dice you have for the rest of the turn. Also there are boost dice given freely for certain actions, and then there are power dice. These dice allow you to do special things (power attacks) or increase the probability/number of dice you roll for a regular action. You get one power die per turn cumulatively (so on the third turn you may use up to 3 power dice throughout that turn.) Really makes the game exciting towards the end of the halves (you play two 5 turn halves, the most goals wins).
There are also special plays that may be called during a turn that change up the rules slightly for that turn and really add to the depth of this game and its tactics.
I love this game, but make sure you check Privateer Press's forum for a few rule clarifications. To summarize the most commonly misunderstood rules: a rattled jack can still attack with basic attacks, but cannot use boost or power dice on these attacks. And when a jack is moved by an attack and the strike a wall, pillar, or grinder (the ball) they are knocked down; however if they hit the goal or another jack they stop but are not knocked down.
Quality of the pieces is pretty good, highly detailed for "pawns", but assembly can be tricky, sometimes heating the socket end of connecters can help you get a tighter fit. The legs/head/arms need a fair amount of pressure to pop in properly, the plastic is pretty flexible so you don't need to worry about breaking them. Also make sure you check your components, I have heard of a few boxes that were missing arms or legs, but the Privateer press customer service will ship you out missing things quickly if you contact them.
All in all a great game, a bit frustrating to assemble. However, once you get it set up you will want to play again and against to find which arms work for you and what strategies will help you the most.
