One of the rarer pleasures of bring a grandparent is playing games with your grandchild that you played with his mom or dad.
Stratego was a favorite of mine and this evening I introduced my grandson to it.
Stratego is a capture the flag strategy game and a lot of fun to play. Exercise a little imagination in the placement of your landmines (now far more politically correct "traps") and your flag and you can enjoys thousands of plays. It's good way to teach young ones the need to think ahead and - for a while at least until they pick up on the techniques - how to lose gracefully. At some point or other, they will start winning and you'll do the whining.
They've updated the game and, in my opinion, not for the better. Instead of the quasi-military theme, it is now dragons, sorceresses, elves and (believe it or not) dwarves and some other characters. But the game play remains unaltered. Each side gets three rows of 10 squares in which to hide their flag and protect it with "traps" and playing pieces. The playing pieces have silly names, but also a numerical strength ranging from 2 through 10. Higher numbers mean more power. There are pieces with special powers.
The rules actually are a tiny bit on the complex side and may be too much for younger children, but even though the game specifies 8+, I think a smart 5 year could handle it.
Game play can be fast enough to keep a young person involved and there is always the suspense of not knowing if the piece you tap to capture will have a higher value than your piece, in which case you lose the piece. The object is to capture the flag. Games takea about 30 minutes.
I loved playing Stratego with my son 35 years ago - and love it just as much playing it with my grandson.
