(More customer reviews)I picked this up on ebay for about 100.00. Beautiful item for the Kong collector, weighs about 35 pounds and seems to be made entirely of cast resin. The board top lifts off and inside is a foam piece with holes for the various pieces. With the exception of one piece with a slight bow to the bottom all the game pieces set well on the board. The figures are sculpted to look rather like Art Deco statues of the 1930's. The black pieces represent the inhabitants of Skull Island and the White pieces are the ship's cast and crew. I especially like the board that has buildings on one side and jungle on the other. The one problem I had (other than the wobbly piece) was that I kept getting the knights and the bishop pieces mixed up as they are of similar height and both represented on the island side by prehistoric animals. (I need more practice to get used to it I guess) I'm pleased as it is a very beautiful chess set of one of my favorite movie characters. At full price it's abit much, but well worth 150.00 or so looking at similar sets.

Medieval Times III Theme Chessmen Review

(More customer reviews)Bought these chess pieces for my boyfriend for Christmas and he just loved them. If you're going to play chess, you have to have a medieval chess set. The only thing that keeps happening is that they get knocked over easily so I think the bases should be heavier. The workmanship is great but from behind, you can get the bishops mixed up with the pawns so I took a permanent marker and painted the back of the bishops head (helmet) black and it didn't take away from the painting that already exists. This was the perfect gift this year!

These chess pieces are full-sized replicas of the originals which were discovered on the Isle of Lewis off the West Coast of Scotland and which are now housed safely and securely in the British Museum of London and in Edinburgh. Many pieces were discovered and this is our interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chess set. The Isle of Lewis chessmen were featured in the movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.In 1831 the sea carried away a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis uncovering a mysterious building that had been buried under the sand. A peasant working nearby found what he concluded to be a collection of Elves and Gnomes. The superstitious highlander flung down his spade and fled home in horror. Superstition in Lewis had survived in a powerful form. Thus, when the peasant first looked at the group of singular little ivory figures it was natural that they should appear as the pigmy sprites of Celtic folklore. However, he was induced by his wife to return to the spot and take the figures home. He sold them to a local collector who realized they were chessmen. There were 78 pieces in all belonging to eight or more sets; 67 are now in the British Museum and the rest in the National Museum, Edinburgh. Experts are unanimous in regarding them as the most astonishing collection of ancient chessmen in existence.

(More customer reviews)These are very nice pieces and arrived in great shape. However, the pieces are much larger than the description here indicates. Here it says the largest piece (i.e., the king) is 2.5" tall. In fact, this set is two sizes larger than that, with a 3.75" king. In a way I don't mind getting more than I asked for, but they don't at all fit my board or the box for pieces I bought. So what do I return? Hmm.
That aside, a lovely set, and a decent price for this size.

Although I didn't see anywhere in the product description that said chess board not included, I was pretty shocked and slightly pissed when I opened it up and saw no game board. It says hours of fun playin, all you need is an opponent! They forgot to mention you also need a damn game board! looks like I need to do an overnight delivery and hope it comes by christmas or I'm screwed.

(More customer reviews)I got it for $50 so I was expecting it to be made of good quality materials. The moment I opened the box, I was impressed by the box that hold the chess set. However, it is very easy to break. I was taking it out very carefully. The chess board and pieces look good, but if you touch the chess board, you know it is made by low quality material. I got it mainly for collection instead of to play with it, so I am a bit disappointed with it.

If you're nit-picky about stuff like that, though, I would be wary of buying this product. And in the end, a plastic chess set from Target works just as well.

(More customer reviews)The pieces and board are slightly smaller than I expected, but not impractically so. (But if you have little kids, the pieces are are definitely swallow size.) Though the set looks delicate, it seems quite well-made and I expect it will hold up as long as no one steps on it - but that would ruin most chess pieces regardless of size, I suppose. I would say its probably a good set for kids 10+. However, my boyfriend and I are both 21 and neither of us feel silly playing with this set so I wouldn't worry about it being too kiddish for anyone.
This set is a solid step up from a toy, but obviously not something you would get for a serious chess player. I like the book box, it makes for easy storage, but the pieces come in little zip-lock bags and the black velvet-looking tray that comes in the box is just plastic and kind of dumb. I don't know why, but I sort of expected little form-fitting pockets inside the box for each piece. It doesn't really matter, though, I just made fancier bags for the pieces and we took the tray out to make a regular box. It was never a really big deal, but I'm still much happier now.
I don't want to go to OCD on you, but the box color is a little more red then the "black" chess board squares, and the "white" and "black" pieces are all slightly darker than the respectively colored squares. It makes them easier to see so its no biggie, but I thought I'd point it out since color was such a deciding factor for me when I bought this set. (I was ecstatic to find this set, because so few sets have brown "black" squares AND brown "black" pieces. Usually its brown "black" squares and BLACK "black" pieces. I know I sound like a freak, but its much pleasanter to play on a board where the color scheme makes sense.) Ok, I went pretty OCD. Sorry about that...
Anyway, if only I could win a game, I'd be perfectly happy.

(More customer reviews)Wow! I purchased this set so that my young children could learn about chess in a fun way. The pieces are GREAT for toddlers and preschoolers to handle and "become" the game of chess. My children learned quickly the names of each piece and how the move along the board.
They are great (no small pieces for the mouth) for learning and interacting with chess and take it from "boring" to exciting. I would invest again in this set, as I see it can continue to be fun as my children get older. The larger than life pieces help make the game come alive for me as well.

(More customer reviews)If you are not travling back to China soon and need a set of chess right now, this is the best way to get the set quickly. Even the shipping and handling cost more than the chess itself. Machine made, not the top notch quality, but it is real wood and feels just like what I used to have back when I was a child. Hope the wood won't crack through this winter. As of all other game pieces, you better make your own board, the plastic chess board is not useful at all. I draw one with Sharpie on the hardwood board. I just wish that I have more time to play it with my son.
