The first time we played the game, we had similar thoughts to other reviewers about how it is nearly impossible for Count Olaf to win. However after playing the game a few more times, we found that the game changes each time you play it AND Count Olaf CAN win.
What makes the game different each time you play is the placement of the secret passages on the board. Some placements are better for Count Olaf than others. To help Count Olaf, we also let Count Olaf choose where the game tiles should be replaced on the board when they are used. Sometimes the children just don't get good dice rolls or cannot get unfrozen. Both of these things are also advantageous to Olaf. We've also found that correctly predicting the next room the guardian goes to helps Olaf tremendously.
Since playing Count Olaf is more challenging, we now fight over who gets to play Olaf. If Count Olaf wins, it is something to brag about.
Children 8 or over (including adult children!) can play Count Olaf, or any of the children. My youngest (age 4) always plays Sunny. If your children are younger than 8, I think whether or not they will have fun playing Count Olaf would depend upon how well they play strategy games in general.
