Snap Circuit 300 to 500 Upgrade Kit Review

This is probably my 8 year old daughter's favorite "toy." Her dad is an engineer, and thus knows a lot about electronics. He said he was learning about the same things in his freshman year of college; so I hate to call it just a "toy." She loves to do this, asks everyday. She is learning a lot of the correct "jargon" like parallel vs. series. She is really looking forward to more projects!

I've has sooooooo much fun with my Arduinos (yes, I have several). The original Arduinos are tiny, and my stack often smashed into my variables. But now! The MEGA is here! We have more memory, folks! And so many pins!
NOTE: The MEGA pinout differs slightly from previous Arduinos. You may need to change your existing software to work with the MEGA.

If you want to start learning electronics and especially, micro-controllers, this mega starter kit is a must have. I have not gone into details due to time constraints but I did try a couple of projects from Arduino website and it works. Easy to setup and connects to the USB port. You download and install the software(IDE with compiler) and thats it. A lot of basic project codes are all on the arduino website. They also have user generated codes too, if you want to do more. I really love this kit and after getting this, I was compelled to learn C++ because the programing language is essentially C++.
Just go ahead and get it.

This breadboard isn't the best construction. The price is great but it is held together by a crappy paper backer-board and I wouldn't count on it for long-term use.

Standard breadboard. One fault I did notice was that a couple of the pin holes were too small to fit the gauge of wire that I was using, but the other holes were fine.

Electronic Catch Phrase Review

Electronic Catch Phrase
Average Reviews:

I first played this game on the standard card version and had a blast playing it. The only flaw with it was that after you've played for a while, you might start remembering words you've seen before and the order in which they come.
So I bought the electronic version thinking it would be a simple improvement - more words in a random sequence. It's not that simple.
Pros:
- The size of the word list, and the fact that you can choose categories is a great addition.
- The portable design. You only have to carry around 1 unit, rather than a box with the unit, the cards, and the buzzer.
- Still the same great game.
Cons:
- The fact that there's no "off" switch hampers the portability. Since the game turns on if you press one of the buttons, if you just pack this in a bag, it can easily turn itself on, and start making that LOUD beeping sound. You need a screwdriver to remove the batteries, so that's not really an option either.
- There's no volume control and the default is very loud.
- Restrictive gameplay. The original card based game was pretty loose. You could split up into teams, or you could keep score in some other way. You could play up to a number, or you could keep playing until you got bored. The electronic version forces you to split into 2 teams and play up to 10 points. There's a voice calling out the score after each point, which is annoying. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to reset the game- if you end in the middle of a game, it'll pick up in that game the next time you play, whether you want to or not.

I think the basic strengths of the game outweigh the problems with the electronic version, but if you're someone used to the offline version, don't assume that the electronic version is exactly the same.

AM/FM Radio Kit/Trainer (requires assembly-advanced) Review

AM/FM Radio Kit/Trainer (requires assembly-advanced)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're a tech buff, you'll love this. I'm building this for my Auto/mechanics class in High School, and this is my latest project. I love it. I've finished the AM part and am halfway through the FM part, and the AM part worked the first time I tried it. It sounds very loud and clear after adjusting the coils. Putting it together was an awesome experience, and I couldn't wipe that grin off my face when I turned it on and it worked. The instructions are very clear, they get straight to the point and have you do some testing with a multimeter along the way to make sure you didn't screw anything up. Great kit, just three tips:
Don't drop the AM antenna. It is little more than a bar of iron, and it WILL crack into several pieces.
Don't forget to put the plastic o-ring under the volume potentiometer.
On the AM/FM tuning gang capacitor, make sure you put the two screws on first BEFORE soldering it to the board. If you don't do this, it will cause the PCB to noticeably bend, and that's no fun.

Learn about and Build A Superhet IC Based AM/FM Radio Receiver. This Superhet 108 AM/FM Radio Kit is a superheterodyne receiver of the standard AM (amplitude modulation) and FM (frequency modulation) broadcast frequencies. The unique design of the Superhet 108 includes an integrated circuit (IC), 9 transistors, 4 diodes, and other related resistors, capacitors, coils, and misc. parts. Because good soldering practices are important, a soldering guide is also provided as well as a component color code and pictorial identification chart. The actual assembly is broken down into 9 sections. The theory of operation for each section, or stage, should be read before the assembly is started. This will provide the student with an understanding of what that stage has been designed to accomplish, and how it actually works. After each assembly you will be instructed to make certain tests and measurements to prove that each section is functioning properly. If a test fails to produce the proper results a troubleshooting guide is provided to help you correct the problem. After all of the stages have been built and tested a final alignment procedure is provided to peak the performance of the receiver and maximize the Superhet 108s reception capabilities. Runs on a standard 9VDC battery, not included. From Elenco.

Snap Circuits SC-300 Review

Snap Circuits SC-300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone with even the slightest electronic background will appreciate the value of this toy. As a kid I remember the long frustrating hours of deciphering components from circuit diagrams and soldering them to create projects that were way too much effort. The limited success with these projects, I believe, is the reason I gave up my hobby.
As a parent of a six-year old, I have been trying to introduce him to all facets of science and this is a wonderful tool. He immediately created a circuit - a combination light/fan circuit - in parallel and in serial - and he understood the difference between them. It was just amazing. He always appreciates what we get him, but he fell in love with this toy instantly. He was engrossed for the next hour experimenting with the various components.
There are about 60 components which create a total of 300 projects. Count on there being about 125-150 basic projects (I have not conducted a detail count!) with the remaining coming from tweaks in these 125-150 basic projects. However, I do not want to discount the value of these tweaks...they are designed to teach the value of electronic components and instigate independent thinking. This is definitely a "Learning" Toy. With the limited emphasis on science in our schools, the approx. [item price] is worth the investment.
For people who cannot envision how these snap into place (I couldn't!), the "snap" is from "snap-button". The component is soldered onto a large piece of plastic which have snap-buttons on it. These snap-buttons snap onto a large plastic grid or onto other components. Simple concept - Snap-On and Snap-Off!!
All the components have their respective symbols stamped on them which aids in early familiarization. The pieces are also individually numbered so that there is no confusion in identifying the right component. The Manual is all-color and very easy to follow, however, some might prefer more detailed explanations.
The model I purchased was "Snap Circuit 300 with Computer Interface" an upgrade to the one available here. The interface package includes software and a cable which connects to the "line-in" jack of your PC. The other end of the cable has two alligator-clips which can connect to any two points in your circuit. The software turns your PC into an "oscilloscope" so that you can "see" the electrical activity between any two points in your circuit. I have yet to fully learn and appreciate the value of the oscilloscope.
For teenagers, there is a Snap Circuit 500. I believe it features more components and more complex circuits for about [item price].
WARNING: PLEASE READ UP ON BASIC ELECTRICITY AND EXPLAIN THE PRINCIPLES TO YOUR CHILD. MY SON CONNECTED THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE POLES OF THE POWER SUPPLY FOR ONLY 5-7 SECONDS - THE BATTERY HEATED UP AND POPPED INTO HIS HAND. DID NOT BURN, BUT TAUGHT A VALUABLE LESSON - TO ME!! I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO EXPLAIN BASIC ELECTRICITY TO HIM. THOSE 2 AA BATTERIES REALLY HEATED UP!!
IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY ONLY ONE TOY THIS YEAR - YOU JUST FOUND IT!

This is a good kit however it did not come with any instructions. With a little bit of searching you can easily find some. It is not assembled so be ready to solder. Mine was missing one resistor but luckily I had an extra one lying around. They are supposed to be mailing me a replacement but I couldn't wait.
Just to let you know...
// Direction pin for motor B is Digital 12
// Speed pin for motor B is Digital 9 (PWM)
//Diretion pin for motor A is Digital 13
//Speed pin or motor A is Digital 10 (PWM)
at least I think....it seems to work for me

Freeze Up Review

Freeze Up
Average Reviews:

Adults and kids will enjoy this fast-paced electronic category game. As the clock ticks down, players compete to come up with words that start with specified letters in 170+ different categories, such as: "Name something found at a picnic, letter A" or "Name a snack, letter P," and so on. This sounds easy, but it's amazing how tongue-tied you can get when the pressure is on. There is relief in sight, however. You can press a button to change the category or the letter, and try again, but it costs you in time - and players each only have a total of 60 seconds in their bank. We've played this game with as many as 8 adults, and the competition was high. It was also great with adult/child teams. Have fun!

Freeze Up is the keep-your-cool countdown category game. Quick - Name an animal that starts with C! How about a fruit that starts with B or a flower that starts with T? Sounds easy, right? How about a sport or state that starts with P? No clue? Losing time? Press the button to change the category or the letter. Think fast, but think smart or other players may challenge your answer. With the clock ticking, players must keep their cool and answer before their time's up and they're frozen out. The last player left in this fast-paced electronic category game is the Freeze Up ch-ch-ch-champion!
Features two challenging ways to play: nail-biting Auto mode and self-paced Manual mode, 170+ think-quick categories, built-in timer and scorekeeper, crystal-clear speech, and fun sound effects. Fun for the entire family. Requires 3 "AA" batteries (not included). For 2 to 8 players.

Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Review

Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The best point in favour of this product is that it is lego style toy that does not intimidate a child with intricate electronic components. My 6-1/2 year old daughter started playing with it and was very excited to have completed her first project to light a bulb with a switch. Theories of electricity followed naturally when initially the bulb did not lightup. I showed her the shiny metal strip beneath the connectors and explained conductivity a little.
Another major advantage is that there are mostly no wires, and the components are hidden from view, giving it a very un-complicated look that a child can easily comprehend. This difference makes possible for my daughter to actually play with it.
The only problem seems to be the quality of plastic used. It looks as if it might break if a component was bent while snapping in. Still, I highly recommend this product.

These helping hands work, and I do use them daily, but it's a trial. The wing nuts don't hold anything tightly enough unless you tighten them with pliers, the magnifying lens is difficult to maneuver, and the base isn't heavy enough.
Bottom line: it's the thrift store price, don't expect name-brand quality.

Elenco AmeriKit Learn to Solder Kit Review

Elenco AmeriKit Learn to Solder Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm 17 and I wanted to learn how to solder printed circuit boards. This is a great product that has (almost) everything you need to get started. The soldering iron melted the solder quickly, even though the solder was lead free. The instruction manual teaches you not just about soldering, but about the components in the kit. It teaches almost like a class, complete with detailed instructions and even quizzes you on what you have learned. In the end, the device you make is pretty useless, but here, its all about the journey not the destination.
I do have a few cons however. There is nothing included to clean the soldering tip like a small piece of sponge. I also could not get the soldering wick to work, so I would recommend also ordering a desoldering pump as well. also, it can be a bit tricky to solder without some kind of helping hand device. However, for less than $15, this is still a great bargain.
The value of this kit is great, however I'm sure that people would be willing to pay a bit more if it included something to clean the soldering tip and possibly a desoldering pump, however, with the value of this kit, adding those items to your order should be no problem.
All in all, I greatly recommend this product to anyone trying to dive into the world of electronics.
