Dungeon Lords is an enjoyable game in which you take the role as a dungeon overlord who must build his dungeon and protect it against adventurers. During the game, you will add tunnels to your dungeon, upgrade tunnels into rooms with special abilities, and buy traps and monsters to to protect yourself against the annual adventurer threat.
The game takes place over two years, and during each of four seasons during each year, you will secretly choose actions that you will subsequently mark on the game board with your minion tokens. The order in which minion tokens are placed (and actions are taken) affects the benefit; typically, the later the action is chosen by a player, the larger the benefit. However, actions can be chosen only three times. If you're the fourth player to choose an action, you won't get to execute it.
At the same time, you'll be managing your level of evil. The more evil you are, the stronger the adventurers you'll face. Evil itself is a resource in this game. For example, you can gain one evil to recruit a ghost if you take the recruit monster action. Sound like a complicated game? It is, but after playing the game once, we pretty much all had the game mechanics down (admittedly, we play a lot of complicated games) and at least a basic understanding of a strategy to pursue.
Let me put this game's difficulty into context if you are a board and card gamer. It is more difficult mechanically than Settlers of Cataan, Agricola, and Puerto Rico. Strategically, it is probably on the same level as the latter two.
