(More customer reviews)I played this game many times when I was younger and still remember all the rules - here goes:
The game board has three Battle Zones in the center and a Fame Track circling the perimeter. There's a Chance deck and an Enemy Deck. An enemy goes in each of the zones and each player chooses two X-Men to start with (silver plastic miniatures with cardboard filecards). Players then place their team (can use one or both of the X-Men) in a Battle Zone and try to defeat the enemy. The enemy has a power rating and players roll dice which are marked something like "1 damage", "2 damage" or "1 hit" and represents battling the baddies. A defeated enemy grants advancement on the Fame Track - which in turn may allow a Chance card to be drawn or an additional X-Men team member. The player who finishes the Fame Track becomes the most famous X-Men team ever and wins.
That's the entire game system and I remember it being way easy to understand but totally re-playable. Enemies include: Magneto, Apocalypse, Sentinels and Mr. Sinister. If I can recall all the characters... Cyclops, Gambit, Jean Grey (I think, although the Dark Pheonix is one of the enemies), Storm, Cable, Nightcrawler, Longshot, Professor X (interesting miniature), Wolverine, Colossus (sp?), Psylocke, Havok, ... Bishop maybe? Kitty Pryde? Archangel? I'm not sure, there's probably more that I can't think of but I know my favorite was Cable because I liked his picture. :) Each of the characters also has some stats like Health and Attack, and special abilities like Flight and Leadership that augment dice rolls or grant movement from HQ to Battle Zones or whatever.
Durability issues are really limited to the miniatures having skinny ankles and Storm was the first to fall victim to that deadly "Feet-done-gone-and-broke-off-because-I-got-bent-in-the-box" syndrome. It's also kind of weird for people who may not be fans (and I was only starting to know the X-Men at the time) to be like, "Longshot? Psylocke? Havok? Who are these guys?" but I guess they needed filler - the game can be played with 2-4 players and they could each have up to four team members.
In a nutshell this game rocks. Now I haven't played this game in at least ten years so maybe it's not as good as I remember, but I've played a lot of games and this one still stands out as one of the best. Is it worth the $85 that's being asked as of the time of this review - if it's in mint condition and it's for a fan (young or old) who really wants a unique X-Men experience, I'd say yeah. Totally. :)
Enjoy!
