In the right company - a chapter of "The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club," for instance, or any group of Mayberry-minded cronies - this game can be a lot of fun. Beware, though, if your opponents are only casual watchers: They'll be bored and you'll win handily, but without satisfaction, every time.
The main problem with this game is its lack of drama. Play consists of rolling a single die and answering trivia questions (true/false, specific answer, multiple choice) to advance your token around the board. That's it: There are none of the unexpected detours, setbacks or rewards that distinguish the best board games.
Had the board included Mayberry landmarks (The Courthouse, Floyd's Barber Shop, Wally's Service Station, The Diner, Myers Lake, etc.) and corresponding activities, play would be enlivened tremendously. The game would also be more enjoyable if it included questions about the program's stars, guest stars and other "reality" aspects, instead of dealing solely with character and Mayberry-oriented trivia.
Despite its shortcomings, I recommend this game to those TAGS fans who have to have absolutely everything associated with the show, and to anyone lucky enough to have enough Andy-philes in their orbit to organize a fair game.
This is a handsome product (despite the rather crude and unflattering portrait of Andy and Opie on the box and on the board itself) and is sure to become a coveted collector's item in the future. It would make an excellent gift for any TAGS fan in your life.
NOTE: "Educational value" really does not apply to this game,
unless you are seeking to expand your knowledge of TAGS!
