Each piece has the symbol of the chess piece it represents, but it does become a bit of a hassle to constantly check which piece is what short of memorizing which transformer represents each piece.
The pieces are a sort of soft plastic material, and the whole set has a smell of spray paint. Again, great collectors item, but not recommended for those who wish to play chess with this chess set.
