They are soft plastic, but they can be primed with the for plastic spray paints readily available, and then painted to suit, thereafter. They can be used for any period, as they have nothing on them to suggest any particular period, or setting. Necromancers who might have a hard time recruiting corpses for their undead armies, will find that dogs are easy to come by, easy to replace, and easy to use to fill their undead ranks! Enjoy!
