We gave this to my daughter on her 5th birthday. The idea is that you remove the "screen", and then place your completed masterpiece back onto the stand to display. Our 3 yo daughter also loves it. She is not an "oral" girl, so we have no concern about swallowing.
The construction is nice...no sharp edges, the pegs are well made, smooth, and good quality plastic. Doesn't feel cheap or cheesy in any way. My daughter has good tactile skills, so the small pieces are no problem for her. I think I read somewhere that the peg colors can vary. The six colors that came in her set were red, orange, yellow, green, blue and white. The red and orange are so close in color it is almost impossible to tell the difference until they are placed and the toy is lit...this is sometimes frustrating. There are 4 storage cups in the base; but with 6 colors, if you want to keep the colors separately, you need to combine two of the colors. We divide them as follows: yellow, blue and red, green and orange, white; this helps ease any color-confusion and frustration.
The design is sleek and modern. Per the previous comment regarding being made in China, I double-checked mine...mine was made in Italy.
It's become such a favorite in our home that every night, I (Mom) has to do a "surprise picture" to display for going-to-sleep. Oh yeah...there's a timer on the light, so it goes out after about 5 minutes, ensuring that it won't get left on, thereby wasting the batteries/light. We've done the whole alphabet -- uppercase letter, lowercase letter and a representative picture. We are now working on numbers 1 through 10, displaying the number, the word "one, two, etc.), how number looks on a domino, and groups of the number (5 groups of 3 pegs for the number 5, etc.)
We love ours. I wish we could find an adendum set of pegs to add the colors.
A few frustrations: 1) this is just a type-A picky mommy thing, the way the holes are grouped, you can't do perfect triangles, circles, etc....they look strange. It works best with wide-angled things and straight lines. 2) it is even a bit difficult for me to hang the screen onto the stand...it takes some finesse.
