This game is one of the 18xx family, which includes 1830 and 1829. The 18xx economic games are built around a map, track tiles, railroad companies, and virtual train management. These are games of skill, with luck playing only a minimal role. While the 18xx series has historically been difficult to teach, partly because of the long running time of the games (2.5 hours to 2.5 days), Steam Over Holland affords a relatively brief experience (about 45-60 minutes per player) and is easy for beginners to learn. It requires 2 to 5 players. I have personally taught about a dozen people to play this game. The components are beautiful, and the game is constantly entertaining and challenging. I would encourage anyone who buys this game to look it up on [...] and download the revised English rules, which I rewrote in collaboration with the game designer. The new rules clarify the game and make it even easier to teach and learn. Happy railroading!

1839 The Netherlands. The new railways are the way to get rich. Invest your money in the best railway companies become the President of one or more companies and lead them to become the best earning companies of the game. Build new track and stations buy the right trains and push the stock value to new heights. Who will become the most successful investor? Steam over Holland is an economics game in which the players invest in and control railway companies. The gameplay uses the same basic mechanics as other 18xx games. However the focus of the game is more on the operation of the companies than on the stockmarket. The goal in the development of this game was to create a short 18xx game which is also suited for players who are new to the 18xx system. For this reason the game was kept reasonably straightforward and there are no extras like mergers loans etc. Description written by W. Eric Martin and used with permission of BoardgameNews.com
