This game is a Mystery Murder Party. It contains all the necessary material to invite your friends for a get together party where they will try to solve a mystery that you have organized.
However, this game does not follow the conventional format of older mystery games like the "How to Host a Murder" series. This one creates a much better and enjoyable partying and gaming experience. The rules are based on the format developed by now defunct French company called SPSR. In this format, players receive Action Points which they can use for searching clues in the game, but APs can also be traded with other players in exchange of information or favors. The player who is the killer knows it from the beginning and will try to avoid being caught. But every other player has secrets to hide and will be very much involved in the game plot.
The game comes with instructions for the organizer, for the players, character descriptions (one for each player) and physical clues. Be prepared for a lot of preparation work, like photocopying and sending invitations, as well as organizing the clues for the game (and decorating the game area, preparing food, etc). The host/organizer actually plays a character, but as he/she knows the story in advance, he/she will not be trying to solve any mystery. It is still very fun to follow up your friends efforts to find out what is going on.
Clues can be photograph pictures, medical reports, letters or handwritten notes or even physical evidence from the crime. They are all included in the game.
The game is for 9 players and some roles, but not all, can be played by either men or women.
Beware of a critical bug in the game. One character sheet has the wrong information. It must be fixed or it will spoil one of the game surprises, and an important one. It involves a character with a tattoo. If you are the organizer, make sure that tattoo information is correct in all character sheets. You will need to fix one of them.
In this scenario, a famous Dr. is murdered in a hospital. As your players gather in the cafeteria to find out what is going on and call the police, an armed man appears with a wounded partner and demands for help. Hijacked at gunpoint and unable to leave the hospital, much less call the police, the players only option is to try to understand what is going on by investigating.
Players are encouraged to dress in costumes and role play during the game. Some of the secrets they are supposed to hide are hilarious and the characters are all very interesting. Game play is mostly free form, meaning that each player is free to do whatever he wants. Most of the time, they will be looking for clues in several areas of the hospital, and using these clues to find out information they don't know about the other players. Once secrets are found, blackmail becomes an important weapon to get additional information from the other players themselves.
The plot is not easy to solve, so don't expect that the game will finish when the culprit is discovered. In fact, it may never happen (which would be in fact the objective of the guilty player - not getting caught). At the end, there is a debriefing where each player writes his findings. Even if the main plot is not solved, I am sure the players will have had a great time. And there are several sub plots that will be discovered by at least some players. Our group's evening was really one to remember.
One last word about this game is that it has very little replay value. Once you have played it, it's over unless you want to host again for a different group of people. Still, it is well worth the single night of play (and the weeks of preparation that come before). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
