I'll be honest - I hate dice games. I can't stand for a game to be decided by luck rather than skill. On the other hand, I love Martin Wallace's games; he constantly presents you with a never ending stream of difficult decisions. In Age of Steam (my favorite game), for example, you build a railroad and try to make a profit, while keeping the stockholders off your back!
So, this being a Martin Wallace was enough to convince me to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. Although it does have dice combat as a major part of the game, this is not a dice fest; the political section of the game sets up the military section, and there is a great deal of strategy involved. Do you need to control Athens, or merely insure it goes on to victory (or defeat)? Should you attempt to gain power in several cities, or consolidate your forces for later and batter your opponents with the Persians this turn?
After one play, I rate this game 8/10. Definitely worth playing, and if you have a few friends who don't mind putting some thought into a game, well worth owning as well.

Together the Greek City States had defeated the greatest power in the world, the Persians. Now, though, pride and envy have led them to fight among themselves in what we know today as the Peloponnesian War.
