(More customer reviews)Cutthroat Caverns has all the epic greatness of dungeon diving party-based fantasy roleplaying with none of the dice, complex rules, or loyalty.
The premise of the game is that your party (2-6 players) is a piecemeal group of hired adventurers who trust no one. They go together into a dungeon crawling with monsters in search of Prestige.
There are nine monsters each game, randomly selected from a much larger number, which gives you a HUGE factor of combinations to battle in successive games. Players battle one monster at a time, acting - more or less - cooperatively to kill each monster in turn.
The players are each dealt a hand of "action" cards, which give them the means to defeat the monsters or betray one another. Also included in the action deck are items which give your character an edge. . . until used or stolen by your "mates."
Here's where things get tricky. Each monster is worth a given amount of Prestige, relative to it's difficulty to kill. All monsters have specialized attacks and "side effects" on your party. Without a degree of cooperation, no one will survive these beasts, however, only the character who deals the KILLING BLOW gets the Prestige. SO, it is in your best interest to be the character who delivers the coup de grace. Naturally, your "friends" all have the same idea. . .
As the game goes on, vendettas form, allegiances crumble, and backbiting reigns, but remember: without teamwork, NO ONE gets out alive.
This game is SUPER FUN, very versatile, and has a small learning curve. You don't have to be a D&D buff to grasp or appreciate the gameplay, and the cards are also quite nice.
Each game takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how many are playing, and every game is different.
Easily worth a measly thirty bucks.

Without teamwork... you'll never survive. Without betrayal... you'll never win.An artifact of untold power lies in your hands. To claim it, you must escape the caverns alive. No less than nine horrific beasts stand in your way - that, and the greed of the other players. In this game of kill-stealing, you decide whether to swing for a whopping 50 points of damage - or hold back, awaiting a more opportune time to strike. Only the final blow matters if you are to score the kill. Hold back or sabotage other's plans too much - and the entire party will die, without a winner.Genre-bending. Dice-less. The totally immersive feel of a RPG in a simple, elegant card game.
