In 1993, Mattel celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Barbie by releasing a copy of the original 1959 doll. Allowing new collectors the opportunity of owning a "genuine" vintage #1 Barbie at a fraction of the price of the original, it also started a tradition of reproducing classic Barbie dolls and fashions; and vintage reproductions have since become a mainstay of Mattel's collector doll output.
Barbie comes dressed in a copy of her black-and-white "zebra print" swimsuit; with matching black open-toed mule shoes, and "cat eye" sunglasses. With her hair styled into the original ponytail twist with bangs, Barbie also wears a pair of gold hoop earrings.
The doll came with a bonus recreation of the original Barbie box, and a 35th Anniversary celebrations booklet. Original examples of Barbie #1 have been known to fetch thousands of dollars, and even the #2, #3 and #4 dolls can be worth that much, too. Mattel's vintage reproductions give Barbie collectors the opportunity to own their favourite dolls and fashions at a fraction of the price of the originals. This reissue of the very first Barbie will add a lovely touch of nostalgia to any collection!
